Testers wanted for alpha version

Tag: UncategorizedStaff @ 10:19 pm

A new version of Phonelocator was demoed at MWC in Barcelona back in February.  It has some new features:

  • Trigger updates remotly using SMS messages
  • Automaticlly SMS a buddy when the SIM card is changed
  • Remote settings modification via website
  • Wifi / Cell ID locaiton
  • Improved registration

Rather than recording a trail of where the phone has been, the new version periodically sends the location of the phone to the server. This reduces the effect of Phonelocator on the phone’s battery life.

If your interested in testing the new version of Phonelocator and you have a S60 v3 FP1, v3 FP2 or v5 phone, send your phone’s IMEI to contactus@phonelocator.mobi. To see the IMEI, dial *#06#

Phonelocator on O2 Litmus and Vodafone Betavine

I’ve added phonelocator to O2 Litmus and Vodafone’s Betavine. Both services allow users to upload and download applications for mobile phones in a similar way to Nokia Mosh. Betavine allows users to tag, report feedback and review applications. Applicaiton authors can also blog using the site. The site will also push links to install applications to users’ hansets via sms. O2 Litmus allows application authors to sell their applications but unfortunatley only to O2 customers.

Phonelocator in the media

Tag: UncategorizedStaff @ 11:21 pm

Phonelocator has featured on a few different blogs and news sites in the past few days. Thanks to Keir Clarke for this post on  google maps mania.

Thanks too to Glenn Letham (Glen 95 – The Nokia N95 user) for this blog post. Glen has also described phonelocator as “one of his favourite things” here He goes on to say, “[phonelocator] allows you to view the location of your phone and a trail of where it has been using this website – your very own mobile dog leash!”

Particular thanks goes to Rafe Blandford who wrote this story about phonelocator for allaboutsymbian
which has resulted in a slew of different stories relating to phonelocator. Including this one, this one and this one in German.

The most unusual post is this one ‘Apocalypso’ from symbian-freak has gone to the trouble of re-designing the phonelocator logo:

symbianfreak's redesigned logo

All of these stories have resulted in new phonelocator users. At the time of writing 127 users have registered in the last 24 hours whereas only 29 registerd in the six days prior to that! You can see user statistics on the phonelocator about us page.

new phonelocator.mobi homepage

A new, faster AJAX version of the phonelocator.mobi homepage was published last night. It shows the locations of all active phonelocator users on a map using the google maps api. (In the future, users will be able to decide if they wish to display their locations on the map) User names are displayed on the left hand side. User details can be displayed by hovering the mouse over the user name. Clicking the username results in the users trail being displayed as before.
